This 69-year-old President of Latvia is well liked by the West. She is known as the Iron Lady for her work in fighting to reclaim Latvia’s democracy from Soviet rule. Liked within the region with reportedly solid management skills, she could emerge as a serious contender—especially for those who are seeking a female S-G. A former Canadian citizen who speaks English, French and Latvian, Vike-Freiberga has an excellent relationship with the US and Europe. Russia is a big question mark here. Without question she would face Russian opposition due to her past as an anti-communist, democracy activist.
